Chemo Starts...

My grandmother had surgery Friday to have her port placed in her chest to start her chemotherapy with on Monday, along with radiation. She'll only be getting a 20% of the typical dose, in hopes that it works. I went over there on Friday evening to visit with her for awhile, along with some family in town from MI. I stroked her pretty soft white hair for quite some time, knowing it will likely fall out soon. She might not have as many side effects with such a low dose. That night her blood sugar dropped down to 27. It's dropped down pretty low several times over the past month. Considering what all the pancreas does, it doesn't shock me much. Something that low though could place her in a coma. That's what worries me most with the chemotherapy. That it makes you nauseous, and fatigued, and with her having diabetes, her levels won't stay in normal range. And because she's a Jehovah's Witness she won't accept any blood products, which means no transfusions as she needs them. She goes in this week for scans on ever portion of her body, just to find out where we are with everything. While they had her asleep for the port, they went ahead and did a needle biopsy on her Pancreas. I didn't know anything about this surgery until it had already started, which was upsetting, as I'd like to have been there. Here are a few pictures taken Friday night during our visit with her... There's one of her holding her great grandson Aidan, and one of her talking to Joey, and Emma's in her lap.
